Sanibel and Captiva Islands
|
The islands of Sanibel and Captiva on
Florida's Southwest Gulf Coast have come to epitomize the "tropical
paradise" image of travel brochures with their natural scenery,
sparkling blue waters and 20 miles of white, sugary sand beaches, famed
for the exquisite shells which roll in with the tide.
But the sands of time in this lovely
corner of Florida also conceal a rich heritage and culture, the islands'
history littered with tales of pirates and adventurers, and of wealthy
socialites who came here for the outstanding beauty and natural
wildlife. Today, the nature lover's dream exists happily alongside
the demands of vacationers in the islands and in surrounding Lee County,
where visitors enjoy golf, tennis, fishing, 26 miles of bike paths, a
National Wildlife Refuge and, of course, the theatres, restaurants, art
galleries and boutiques which complement these sophisticated vacation
destinations.
The islands are served by nearby
Southwest Florida International Airport and both Miami and Orlando are
just a 3 hour drive away. Tampa, with its own international
airport, is within approximately 2 hour's driving distance.
