| The island of Longboat Key, lying just off the coast of
Sarasota in the crystal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, is well renowned as a sophisticated
destination. And this is about as chic as Florida gets, with a combination of elegant
extravaganza, palm-lined footpaths and, of course, the 9 miles of sugary white sand
beaches so favoured by the travel brochures. Add to that the constant sunshine and balmy
Gulf Breezes, and just about everything can be al fresco which, of course, is part of its
charm. The centre of gravity on Longboat Key is St. Armand's Circle, a cluster of ritzy designer shops, pavement cafes and formal restaurants. This is the place to be seen - for promenading or cruising around in a boulevard car, Longboat Key has just the right mix of sophistication. Mercedes badges and polished English sports cars are very much at home here in this surprisingly uncontrived blend of European cum Tropics cum generally Cosmopolitan ambience. The development of the island was an ambitious vision of 1920's entrepreneurs before the great Wall Street crash and for many years it lay as silent ruins of their dreams, battered by natural and economic storms. Today, Longboat Key still retains something of that original grand scheme, its pristine pavements bordered by tropical foliage and dotted with classical statuary. Approached across the beautiful Sarasota Bay, the island undulates with manicured golf courses and there are miles of meandering pathways for cycling, walking or rollerblading. The sunsets too are pretty spectacular. If you hate Orlando, you'll love Longboat Key! Neighbouring Lido Key is a little more casual with some modestly priced accommodation and a great picnic area, shaded by lofty pines and just a few steps to the beach. All the white sand along these shores is good for shell collecting and Lido Beach is no exception. A perfect place for water sports or just relaxing and watching the sailing boats. |
