KEY LARGO

Immortalised in the song of the same name, Key Largo lies within an hour's drive of Miami between the tranquil waters of the Florida Bay and the vibrant turquoise of the Gulf Stream, home to the nation's only living coral reef.

Key Largo is home also to America's foremost underwater parks - the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary. This is a snorkeler's or scuba diver's paradise whilst leisurely trips to sea are available through local charter boat companies. Nature trails abound and there are opportunities to frolic with trained dolphins. As you would expect, the area is also well endowed with excellent seafood restaurants.

In common with the other Florida islands, Key Largo has a history worth exploring whilst Humphrey Bogart fans will find the African Queen at her permanent moorings here.
