EAST COAST

Places to stay :

Florida’s East Coast is Oceanside – larger-than-life beaches and features as diverse as bikers’ festivals and wildlife refuges.

Undoubtedly there is sun and fun here. The East Coast is home to Daytona, the world’s largest beach, famous for being 23 miles long and a long standing favourite for ‘spring-breakers’ as well as bikers, motor racing enthusiasts, and surfers.

An easy drive from the attractions area of Central Florida, a barrier island boasts its own major attraction – NASA and the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, located on what has become known as The Space Coast.

The coastal towns strung along Florida’s Atlantic Coast celebrate the ‘sun and fun’ atmosphere but there is relaxation too. Cocoa Beach is popular with surfers but has a fishing pier and a laid-back ethos. It is even possible to get a glimpse of a space shuttle launching. This is also the place to watch sea turtles or to take an airboat ride to see the alligators!

To the southeast lies Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Palm Beach, Deerfield Beach and, of course, Miami Beach – names which conjure internationally recognised images of movie star homes and luxury yachts.

The towns on Florida’s East Coast all have interesting histories but none more so than St. Augustine, America’s oldest port and oldest continuously settled city, founded in 1565. This sophisticated city has a plethora of historic buildings and there is a wide choice of things to see and do. Museums abound and Ponce de Leon’s World Famous Fountain of Youth hints at the quest which drove the founder of the city. At Marineland’s Dolphins Conservation Center you can swim with the dolphins, or head to St. Augustine Beach for the beach and lagoon at Anastasia State Park.
